THE VICTORIAN LONDON CD-ROM
(a CD-ROM of www.victorianlondon.org)
Hi - several people have asked me if they can have a CD-ROM of the site, given its size (355MB at last count). So, although it's not a money-making venture, I've decided to make this facility available, in the hope it will help repay the c. £600 pa this site costs me to maintain (we won't mention the cost of acquiring the original texts!).
Please note, this is not a big corporate venture - you pay me the cash, I record the CD-ROM here at home, and post it to you from my local post office. Simple. Any queries, email me lee@victorianlondon.org
Here are the details:-
HOW MUCH DOES THE CD-ROM COST?
UK and Ireland - £12 POUNDS
USA, Europe and rest of world - $25 US DOLLARS
(see http://www.xe.com/ucc/ for current conversion rates)If you want to donate more to keep the site going, I'd be grateful, but I think the above is a reasonable price.
HOW DO I PAY?
IMPORTANT:- Please email me before doing anything, to check I am here and able to supply the CD.
I will ask you to set up an account with www.paypal.com and use that to send me the money electronically (my email address is lee@victorianlondon.org).
WHAT DO I GET?
An exact copy of the web-site at time of recording, on a CD-ROM, minus the advertisements which normally appear at top and bottom of each page. Just as an example, this includes over 40 full text books - rare Victorian texts which would cost hundreds to acquire in hard copy; various cartoons (eg. from Punch) and photographs (eg. Birch's Descriptive Album of London). It also includes the following maps, as seen on the web site
— 1844 - Mogg's Plan for Viewing London
— 1848 - Bethnal Green
— 1852 - Map from Watkins Directory
— 1854 - Map from Pictorial Handbook of London
— 1871 - Whitbread's Map
— 1895 - Reynolds' Shilling Map
— 1899 - Pocket Guide to London
— 1899 - Railway Map of Central LondonFor the technically inclined amongst you:- the disk will be a 24x CD-ROM (ie. recorded on a PC at 24x).
The files will be strictly HTML (ie. plain web pages), a couple of stylesheets and gifs/jpgs ... ie. nothing remotely dangerous to your PC's health. As with any CD-ROM you buy in the shops, I will take every reasonable precaution in this regard but you are responsible for virus-checking; it is a condition of supplying the CD that you accept this responsibility. Likewise, you must accept that I am not responsible for any errors or omissions. Likewise that I am not responsible for any loss (direct, indirect or consequential) or any liability whatsoever you may incur in connection with this CD-ROM. When you email me, I will ask you to confirm this.
It's also important you read the notes below:-
WHAT DON'T I GET?
You do not get
1) Maps on other sites ... my site has links to certain maps such as — 1862 - Stanford's Library Map (Motco site). I do not own these sites; so I cannot send you the maps on them! It is strictly the maps listed above. If you are not sure about a particular map, ask before purchasing. But, basically, if it doesn't have http://www.victorianlondon.org/ as part of the address, it's not mine to sell!
You do not get
2) high-resolution images of pictures on the site
the pictures are supplied exactly as on the web-site - you don't get better resolution, a bigger picture or anything different at all; that said, if I have a copy of a particular original picture at home, I'll happily supply a high resolution copy for personal use, free of charge - just email me ... you don't need to buy the CD-ROM for that.
You do not get
3) search engines
this is important ... the search engines on the site (both the main one, and the Dickens search) will not function on a CD-ROM ... the links to "Search" will therefore still be to the page on the web site; if you want to search the site on CD-ROM, then you can use the single word/phrase search in Windows Explorer or anything else you have on your PC - but that is your responsibility; ie. no search engine provided; if you don't understand what I mean by all this - email me!
You do not get
4) a glossy package with a nice cover; none of that - you just get a working CD-ROM, intended for personal use, in a clear plastic case
A NOTE ON COPYRIGHT
I have taken every reasonable step to ensure the material on this web-site and disc is copyright-free. If I have inadvertently added any material that is still in copyright - please contact me. I will remove it from the web-site and future editions of the disc.
