Read the book

Dear Reader,

The Diary of a Murder is my seventh novel, but the first to be published online. It's available for free on this site and I'd love for you to read it.
It's a brave (some might say foolhardy) decision for a published author to 'give away' a book on the internet. If anyone is interested, they can read a more detailed explanation of the commercial side of things under
About this book.
Why this book, in particular? Well, it's rather well-suited to the web, and I had an online version in the back of my mind when I wrote it. Victorian diaries and 'commonplace books' are the ancestors of the modern blog — why not combine them? There are differences, of course. The Victorian diarist typically wrote for posterity, the modern blogger writes for an ephemeral now. But the urge to document innermost thoughts, fears and desires persists across the centuries. Diarists, mind you, are strange creatures. They can be lively, tedious, comical, self-obsessed ... you should be warned that my diarist may also be a murderer.
    What more can I say?
In short, I present this 'e-novel' for your entertainment. If, like me, you're fascinated by the Victorian period, or you just like a good mystery with a great twist, read on!
