ROYALTY THEATRE, WELLCLOSE SQUARE, was built by John Palmer, the actor, opened June 20th, 1787, with a prologue by Murphy, and burnt down in April, 1826. The name of the architect was Cornelius Dixon. It was originally intended for the performance of five-act pieces, and opened with As You Like It ; but the patentees of the other theatres memorialising the Lord Chamberlain on the subject, the new theatre was restricted to pantomimes and still smaller entertainments. The ill-starred Brunswick Theatre was erected on its site.
